Matty's Musings - FIRST!
Share
Howdy-doo fellow Stick folk.
This is the first in, what may become, a new segment here on our Blog and News page where I, Matty Hawkins, ramble a bit. I'll talk about coffee, what is happening at The Stick's Roastoreum and just generally muse on musings musingly.
What is the newness at The Roastoreum?
A new single origin Colombia has hit our shelves. The Colombia Narino Huellas De Encanto. I always dig a lightly roasted coffee from Colombia. I find that there are some tropical fruit notes that tingle my tongue in a pleasant way.
We also just got a new grinder for our retail shelves. This one comes from NUTTII and is the OX Portable Grinder PRO. It is extremely reminiscent of the Timemore Go grinder, which was a big hit here in the shop for its size, price point, and quietness. The OX doesn't disappoint in any of those areas either. We opted for the PRO version which has a metal construction and is $195+tax. We generally like things made of metal that are a bit pricier but stand the test of tired induced clumsiness.
Behind the scenes, the system that we've built for tracking orders, customer communications, and green coffee inventory has seen some really big improvements! Our folks out in the field can now make their own notes in our system right from their phones! This is a project that has been in the works, in one way or another, for the last eight years! Now that it is live, it is time to improve. Kaizen! This might not be big and flashy for our customers, but for us it makes all the difference to have effective tools to make sure that all of you lovely people get your freshly roasted coffee when you need it.
What is on our minds lately?
Lately we've been thinking about how to add value for our customers and how to advertise and spread Stick-lore in a way that feels...right. This blog post is a part of my efforts to communicate with you lovely folks in a way that isn't invasive, yet is still informative and, hopefully, interesting! (Did that sentence have three commas? It sure did!)
I like to make books by hand here in my spare time as well so a zine full of fun STICK STUFF is also something that sounds really cool to me, personally.
How am I brewing lately?
I have been obsessed with the Origami Dripper lately (using a Hario V60 filter). While exploring recipes and techniques to use the Origami, I came across the Tetsu Kasuya 4:6 Method. This has been a huge rabbit hole for me, in the best possible way. Tetsu Kasuya 4:6 Method Recipe | Honest Coffee Guide does a better job of explaining it than I ever could so check out that link if you want to dive deeper.
My recipe is:
20g coffee : 300g water
60g bloom
60g pour
90g pour
90g pout
chef kiss

Catch you next time!
